In terms of looks the Logitech Squeezebox Boom is a fairly compact mini audio device, measuring about 5-inches high by 13-inches wide by 5-inches deep. The front is angled a bit so you can see the screen even if you're looking at it from the top. The unit has a wide button at the top that can be used as a snooze button or sleep toggle. The vacuum-fluorescent display is similar to the one on the Squeezebox Classic. The blue-green readout is easy to read and even auto-adjusts to the brightness in ambient lighting. The screen doubles as a clock when the device is not in use.
The Logitech Squeezebox Boom has a 30-watt digital amplifier, and a two-way speaker design with 3-inch woofers flanked by 0.75-inch tweeters on each side. Full bass and treble adjustments are available, with a "Stereo XL" expander to provide a wider sound field.
The controls are simple but need some getting used to. The controls include functions like play, pause, rewind, forward, add playlists, power and volume. There are also six presets for one-touch access to your favorite Internet-radio stations. The keys are all backlit. There's also a little remote control with stand out buttons and a magnetic surface so you can snap it on to the top of the Logitech Squeezebox Boom, refrigerator door and other metal surfaces.
The Logitech Squeezebox Boom connects via 802.11g wireless or wired Ethernet and can even work as a wireless-to-Ethernet bridge for your next-gen consoles. The back panel houses a network port and two 3.5mm jacks. One is for auxiliary input and the other is for audio output. The Logitech Squeezebox Boom offers AAC, MP3, WMA, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, WMA Lossless, Apple Lossless, and Ogg Vorbis file format compatibility. Other features include an RSS newsreader and various customizable multiple alarms. The bundled software is very useful with plenty of options.
